Smoothies make excellent breakfasts and snacks, and basically work on a very simple formula.
All you need is a very basic blender, some fresh ingredients and a little imagination.
Here are the main ingredients that make up a smoothie:
1. 1 cup of liquid
It can be milk, soy milk, fruit juice, cold tea or coffee, or even water.
2. 1/2 cup of fruit
You can add a banana, chopped mango, chopped apple, strawberries, blueberries, or any other kind of fruit, both soft and hard. Or try various combinations of fruits. Increase the quantity of fruit for a thicker smoothie.
3. Thickener (optional)
Add 1/2 cup of yogurt, cream or ice cream. Or try crushed ice.
4. Sweetener (optional)
Add 2 teaspoons of sugar, fructose, honey or articificial sweetener.
5. Additional ingredients
Banana smoothies taste great with a hint of vanilla and cinammon. Other spices that work well are nutmeg and ginger. Some people add a raw egg for protein. You can also add a small amount of lemon or lime juice.
Blend the ingredients for a few minutes until smooth.
